Every day it is common for rotating machines that work at upper acceptable limits of operation where probability of faults is relatively high. These faults are caused by electrical, thermal and mechanical, as well as by operational and environmental conditions. The majority of monitoring and protective systems use digital processors that allow utilization of complex criteria for determining the presence of the faulty state of the machine. Besides the fault detection, fault diagnosis that determines the cause and location of the fault also requires expert knowledge.
The numerous studies have showed that measurement of magnetic field inside and/or outside of the machine may detect faults. Typical examples are inter-turn short circuited winding of stator and rotor, broken rotor bars and ring of the squirrel cage and eccentricity.
A new solution called Energy Harvester for fault diagnosis is based on the magnetic field measurement using a measuring coils installed in the air gap of the machine. The measuring coils can be used for fault detection and diagnosis, and also as power supply for the diagnostic system.
We recently expanded our sales network with a new company from Latin America. Hidrosatur SAC from Peru is a manufacturer of hydraulic turbines from 20KW to 4MW. The company also supplies large scale special projects in the region using well-known brands of manufacturers.
Vibrations are one of the most important factors that affect the operation and lifetime of electrical rotating machines. Permanent monitoring and periodic vibration tests provide insight into the dynamic state of the machine and can indicate problems during machine exploitation. With hydro generators for example, radial vibrations are mainly monitored and analyzed and these vibrations also comply with standards and contractual/tender requirements which define criteria of reliability for generator in operation. In addition to radial or flexural vibrations, problems and failures of rotating machines can also be caused by occurrence of torsional vibrations, which can lead to major machine damage and thus financial losses.
There is no doubt that condition monitoring systems add value to production processes. Nevertheless companies don't always utilize their full potential. Setting some general goals like reduction of downtime while reducing the production costs may be a challenge when it comes to their implementation. Asking the right questions will lay the proper foundations when defining a solution that will maximize the productivity of your facility.
